I Heart CVS

I am quickly realizing that CVS is a pretty awesome store for coupon matchups. My favorite part is that you can use as many Extra Care Bucks as you have, without worrying about having a specific number of items like Walgreens. It makes it really easy. That, and the magic coupon box (you scan your Extra Care Card at the red box and you get bonus coupons sometimes when you go).

• 2 Pampers Jumbo Packs: $8.99, get $2ECBs (limit 1). Used $1/1 (P&G Mailer) = paid $16.98/2, got $2ECBs (because of the limit, I only got the one printout).
• 2 Colgate Sensitive Toothpastes: used rain check from last week for $3.79 each, get $3.79ECBS. Used two $1/1 (SS 2/6/11) = paid $5.58/2, got $8ECBs. Apparently they round up to the next dollar.
• 4 Milky Way bars: 4/$2, get $1ECBs when you buy 4. Used B2G1 free (RP 2/6/11) = paid $1.50/4, got $1ECBs.
• 13 Mentos rolls: $0.50 each. Used 13 $0.50/1 (SS 2/6/11) = all free! There were a lot of inserts at Caribou that week...
• CVS Bandages: $3.49. Used $3/1 pharmacy item from promotional mailer = paid $0.49.
• Dentyne Pure gum: $1.29. Used free coupon from promotional mailer.
• Snickers Squared: $0.50. Used free coupon from promotional mailer.

Tuesday Tips: Restaurant.com

Have you ever tried Restaurant.com? We did, for the first time, this past weekend when we went to San Antonio. You can get $25 gift certificates for $10 (or less with a promo code, which are frequently released). We ended up getting 4 certificates for less than $10 total. There's a lot more selection in larger cities - I know there are only a few choices for us locally, but this is definitely a good resource to save some money on vacation.

Once you buy your certificates, you can choose to print them right away, or access them later. Most have certain requirements - the big one to look out for is the minimum purchase amount - but you can view all of those before you purchase.

We got 2 winners (one was Azuca Nueva Latino - AMAZING food and great service!), 1 that was okay, and 1 we opted not to use, because it was downtown, on a weekend, right near the big theater, and we didn't want to fight with traffic, or wait in line, or pay for parking. My advice would be to look at the menus they have posted at Restaurant.com, and find reviews online. If you are looking for a vacation, you'll also want to check out where the restaurants are located compared to everything else. This is definitely a resource we will use again!

CVS and Walgreens Trip

Our CVS opened on Sunday, but today was the first chance I had to check it out. Here are my deals:

• 2 Huggies Jumbo Packs: $8.99 each, get $4ECBs (like Walgreens Register Rewards) when you buy 2. Used two $2/1 (SS 1/23/11) = paid $14.98, got $4ECBs.
• 3 Vitamin Waters: 3/$3, get $1ECBs when you buy 3. Used three $0.75/1 (peelies that Jesse grabbed from a Casey's display) = paid $0.75/3, got $1ECBs!
• Speed Stick Deoderant: $2.99, get $2ECBs. Used $0.50/1 (SS 1/30/11) = paid $2.49, got $2ECBs!
• 1 CVS Green tag (not shown): $0.99. They scan this tag each trip you use a reusuable bag, and you get $1ECBs every 4th time.
• I also got a rain check for Colgate Toothpaste that was on sale $3.79, get $3.79 ECBs because they were already out of stock.
• Total spent: $18.35, and I got $7ECBs for next time!

Tuesday Tips: How to Pack a Suitcase

One of my least favorite parts of taking a vacation is packing. I always feel like I'm going to forget something, and, especially now that we have Jonah, there's never enough room for everything. Here are a couple things I've found make packing easier.

#1: Make a list. Start your list of what to bring about a week before your planned trip. You can organize it by person, by piece of luggage, or however is easiest, but start your list early, so you can add to it as you think of things. If you always bring the same basic items along, consider making a master packing list and keeping it for future trips.

#2: Roll clothes. Fold them most of the way, and finish by rolling, as pictured above. It saves space, and helps clothes come out less wrinkly, although wrinkles depend on the fabric.

#3: Bring clothing items you can wear more than once. Jeans are good. One sweatshirt or light jacket that matches your other items will be fine. Choose clothes that you can mix and match and you'll have variety without having too many items.

#4: Don't waste space on shoes. Limit yourself to one or two pairs. I won a pair of Footzy Rolls awhile back, which are ballet flats that roll up and take up almost no space.

#5: Wear your bulkiest clothing on travel days. If you're bringing a pair of heavy boots, a large coat, or other big items, wear those on the plane or in the car so they don't take up your entire suitcase.

#6: Use your samples! Nearly all of the free samples of toiletry items I post are below the 3.4oz. limit for airlines. These are enough to last a few days without having to pack entire bottles. Plus, if they leak, your mess is much more limited.

Tuesday Tips: Go Paperless

Chances are if you regularly read this site and sign up for freebies, the amount of mail you get has increased. And most of that is good (don't worry, I get junk mail too). But there is one way you can cut down on the paper in your mailbox: Go paperless with your bills!

Bank statements, credit card statements, and cell phone bills are all available online. You can view them there, or save them to your computer to access later. I am working on switching all of our statements over to paperless, except for a few (like rent and our electric bill) that don't have that format.

My one word of caution is to only do this if you regularly keep up on your bills, or have a set day/time that you check all of your balances. Otherwise, not having those paper statements telling you how much you owe could be big trouble!

Walgreens Trip

Again, not a huge week for me at Walgreens this week, but I had some Register Rewards to use.

• Pampers Cruisers box: $19.99*, and Pampers Wipes Refill pack: $5.99. Used $2/both (P&G 1/30/11). Paid $23.98, got $5RR for buying $25+ worth of select P&G products.
• 2 Gillette Body Washes: B1G1 50% off at $4.99. Used two $2/1 (P&G 1/30/11) = paid $3.49/2, or $1.75 each. Not the best price on body wash, but Jesse needed some.
• 2 M&M's (12.6oz.): $2/5. Used $1/2 (February Walgreens) and $1.50/2 (RP 1/23/11) = paid $2.50/2, or $1.25 each.
• 2 Baby Ruth bars (1 already eaten): $0.39 each (ad coupon)
• Used two $2RR from last time.
• Paid $27.72, got $5RR. Not the best deals I've ever gotten, but Jesse needed body wash, and we needed a big pack of diapers for when Jonah goes to visit his Grandma and Grandpa in a few weeks.

*I originally grabbed a box with 54 diapers in it instead of 64, and it rang up wrong. Luckily, my favorite cashier was nice enough to call a manager up to double check for me, and she found the right boxes, hidden behind the other ones. She then did a refund and re-entered them so I got my Register Rewards. They were both really nice about it, which is why I like this Walgreens so much - I rarely have a bad experience there, even with all my coupons.

Cub Foods Trip

The subtotal for all this before coupons was $68.32. I spent $2.65 out of pocket (because I had money on a gift card from Christmas to use). How did I do?

• 10 Campbell's Chunky Soups: 10/$10, or $1 each (you don't have to buy 10, but I had the coupons). Used two $2/5 printables = paid $6/10, or $0.60 each. These are great for easy lunches for Jesse to take to school.
• Wholly Salsa: $2. Used $1.50/1 printable = paid $0.50!
• 2 Old Dutch Salsa (32oz.): $4.99 each. Used B1G1 free (Cub coupon booklet) = paid $4.99/2, or $2.50 each! That's what I normally pay for a salsa half that size without coupons.
• 10 Fuze juice drinks: 10/$10. Used $5/10 (Cub coupon booklet) and $3/10 printable (no longer available, but there is a Cub "Savings for a Better You" booklet that has this coupon too) = paid $2/10, or $0.20 each!

Tuesday Tips: Use a Crockpot

This is my crockpot. Probably one of my favorite kitchen appliances ever. I love being able to throw a bunch of ingredients in a pot and leave it all day, and come back later to have dinner all ready. There are so many recipes available for crockpot cooking, or adaptable to crockpot cooking. Lots of times, I just put my soup recipes in on low midday, and they're ready for dinner.

You can also use the crockpot to make homemade vegetable broth, something I tried on the stovetop and am going to try in the crockpot soon. Hot chocolate? Done. Cooking dried beans? Yep. I've even heard of people baking cakes and desserts in the crockpot, though I haven't tried that yet.
