TLC's Extreme Couponers

TLC aired a special called "Extreme Couponers" last night. I happened to be at my parents', who have cable, and so we watched it. The show followed four people who use coupons to get great deals, and are on the extreme end of couponing. We're talking 9 carts, maxing out the cash registers in terms of items scanned (apparently there's a 1,000 scan limit - who knew?), and rooms full of stockpiled items.

I like coupons. Anyone who reads this blog knows that. But I have to say, I was a bit disappointed with how this show turned out. I think it made couponers look crazy, selfish, and a bit rude. Most of these shoppers were clearing off shelves, making such huge purchases that they took up a cashier's line for hours (!), and hoarding collections that included things like 40+ bottles of salad dressing.

The final couponer they showed did donate a large order (over 1,000 boxes of cereal) to his local church food bank, but there wasn't much mention of donating the extras otherwise. These people came out to look more like hoarders than bargain shoppers. If I can get an item for free, or even get paid to buy it, I may pick up several, but most will get donated. These items are not good deals if they're going to expire before I can use them.

I liked the idea of the show, and being that it was called "Extreme", I understand why they showed what they did. However, I wish they would have shown some of the more applicable, smaller-scale tips behind successful couponing. I think that could be a tremendous help to a lot of people. Did you watch the show? What did you think?

Walgreens and Target Deals

I didn't find too many good deals at Walgreens this week, but I had some Register Rewards to use up and we needed diapers, so I stopped for a few things.
  • Huggies Jumbo Pack: $10.99. I did not have any coupons. Sad.
  • Gain dish soap: $0.89 (ad coupon). Used two $0.50/1 (P&G 11/28/10) = paid $0.39 each!
  • Colgate Total toothpaste: $2.49, get $1.50RR. Used $1/1 (Walgreens Diabetes & You magazine) = paid $1.49, got $1.50RR!
  • 4 Wonka candy bars (3.5oz.): 2/$4. Used two $3/2 printables and $1/2 (December Walgreens), which took off $2 = 4 free! Good stocking stuffers!
  • Used $2.50 and $5RR from last time = paid $6.66.

Target's price-matching is dumb. You have to go to Customer Service to do it, rather than at the register. I had a less than pleasant experience with this today: Since I had used coupons, the computer wasn't recognizing the correct price, and the cashier told me that she wouldn't be able to do it. I argued, because she had said earlier that it would have worked if I had come to Customer Service first, and I did end up getting my price match, but it was quite a hassle for $0.68. I plan to write to Target about their price-matching system, because there must be an easier way to do this. Anyways, to the deals...

  • 2 Rice Krispies: $2.33, price matched Walgreens $1.99. Used $2/2 printable = paid $1.98/2.
  • Market Pantry mini marshmallows: $1.17. Used Free Marshmallows when you buy 2 Rice Krispies Target printable = free!
  • Sprite 20oz.: $1.49. Used free product coupon from My Coke Rewards = free!
  • 4 Propel Water 24oz.: $0.89 each. Used two B1G1 printables (no longer available) = 4/$1.78!
  • Bounty Basic paper towels: $0.99. Used $1/1 (P&G mailer) = free!
  • Seventh Generation wipes: $2.99. Used free product coupon from Facebook fan win = free!
  • 2 Head & Shoulders travel size shampoos: $0.97. Used $2/2 (P&G mailer) = 2 free!
  • 2 Herbal Essences travel size hair care: $0.97. Used two $1/1 (P&G 11/28/10) = 2 free!
  • 2 EverReady AA Battery Packs: $1 (in dollar spot). Used two $1/1 (SS 11/21/10) = 2 free!
  • 3 Johnson's Buddies single soaps: $0.97 each. Used three $1/1 Johnson's product from the company (I had e-mailed a complaint that a printable coupon link wasn't working correctly, and they sent me these coupons) = 3 free!
  • Got $0.10 off for using 2 reusable bags. Paid $4.75 for everything!

Tuesday Tips: Do the Math

Whether you're comparing price per ounce in the grocery store, or trying to figure out if you should switch your cell phone to a prepaid plan, it pays to do the math. I keep a small calculator in my coupon box, because I don't have the time it would take to do the math in my head. Sometimes, you'll discover that what's advertised as a great deal really isn't.
Take the hotel I work at. There is a loyalty program that gives you 3 points per dollar you spend that you can then use toward a free night's stay. Once you reach the highest level of the rewards program, you get an arrival gift each stay. Currently, you can choose from an extra 200 points, or a snack package (2 bottles of water and a snack size of either cookies or trail mix).
The snack package, even at outrageously expensive vending machine prices, would cost a little less than $5. 200 points at 3 points per dollar would cost $66.67. And yet people still choose the snack package.
Are there areas of your life that could use some math?

20 Days of Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Sheet Music Wreath

Well, we've made it to the end. I hope you've enjoyed these as much as I have!

Materials:
  • Sheet music scraps
  • Elmer's glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon to hang

For your sheet music, a fairly difficult piece is best - that way there are lots of notes. I used a photocopy of a Bach piece. Cut rectangles of the actual music, trimming off the white space. Mine started atabout 3" x 2", but I made some longer and a few shorter. I believe I used 7 or 8 pages worth of music for one ornament. How fat or thin you make your rolls will determine how much you will use.

I decided to dye my photocopies with coffee so that they wouldn't be so starkly white. Just soak your pieces, then spread them out on a rag or paper towel to dry. I would suggest putting a layer of rags or paper towels on top as well so they don't crinkle too much.

Once they are dry, you can roll them up and secure the edges with Elmer's glue.

Hot glue the rolls together. They will curve in a bit just because of where the glue ends up. Glue a ribbon to the back and hang. I got the idea for this ornament here.

20 Days of Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Toothpick Tree

Here's a quick and easy project that's pretty painless (hopefully)...

Materials:
  • Toothpicks
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon
Hot glue three toothpicks together to make your tree trunk. Then glue on layers of toothpicks, breaking them into progressively shorter pieces. I found it easiest to put a dab of hot glue on my trunk, then do about 3 toothpicks at a time.

Not perfectly symmetrical? Neither are real trees. Hopefully you will not burn your fingers on the hot glue too much...

Once you have all of your toothpicks in place, glue a ribbon loop to the back and you're done! As with some of the past ornaments, you could embellish with more decorations if you wanted to. I like this.

20 Days of Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Finger Snowmen

These are a lot of fun...My favorite part was the decorating, but I'm pretty sure any kid's favorite part would be the painting.

Make sure you get everything ready to go beforehand. This is especially important if you are working with really young kids, who don't necessarily understand that a paint hand can't touch everything. That is also the reason I don't have any pictures of the "during" process. You understand...

Materials:
  • Ball ornaments of any solid color
  • White paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Newspaper, rag to clean up paint hands
  • Egg carton or cup to hold ornaments while they dry
  • Sharpies in various colors
  • Ribbon
  • Cardstock, hole punch for poem (optional)
Paint the four fingers and part of one hand with the white paint. Place the ornament in your hand and curl your painted fingers up slowly. Release and flip upside down into the egg carton or cup to dry (like in the top photo).

Once dry, decorate your snowmen with Sharpies! This is Jonah's, and it actually looks a lot better now that it's decorated. He didn't quite get the concept of closing his hand without moving it around.

Here's the poem that can go with it:
These aren't just any snowmen
As anyone can see.
I made them with my hand
Which is a part of me.
Now each year when you trim the tree
You'll look back and recall
Christmas of 2010
When my hand was just this small!
Just for fun, I made one too. Like the bowtie?
I got this idea from Full of Great Ideas, which is a great blog, by the way. Definitely one of those projects to consider doing over the years to see how they grow!

20 Days of Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Retro Toilet Paper Tube Ornaments

I thought these looked pretty cool in the picture, and I recommend painting your toilet paper tubes before you start for a more finished look, but you definitely don't have to.

Materials:
  • 2-3 toilet paper tubes
  • 3 pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Ribbon to hang

Measure sections of toilet paper tube that are 3/4" wide. Flatten and cut. You will need 10.

Plot two dots, 3/4" from each end. Punch out with hole punch.

Thread one pipe cleaner through one hole on each tube section. Twist the ends together to secure and spread the toilet paper tube sections out evenly. Twist your other two pipe cleaners together and thread through the second holes on each section. Twist the ends together to secure. You may need to trim a little bit off.

See? It's okay, but I think it would be prettier if it were painted. Either way, tie a ribbon on and hang it on your tree. I found this ornament idea at Family Fun.

20 Days of Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Quilled Paper Ornaments

These are pretty quick and easy, and they look pretty too!

Materials:
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Elmer's glue
  • Toothpick
  • Ribbon to hang
Here's how to make a tree:
Cut some long-ish strips of paper. One will be the trunk for your tree. The rest you will cut to varying lengths and curl for the branches.

Wrap the branch strips around a toothpick to curl. I tried using a pencil first, but they didn't curl very nicely. A toothpick is definitely better.

Glue the branches to the sides of the trunk. I put mine slightly off of symmetrical, which I think looks nice, and is easier to hold for a bit to get them to dry.

Glue a loop at the top of your tree trunk. Thread ribbon through this loop to hang.

Put the mini tree on your big tree! You could also use glitter or paper or other fun things to make ornaments for your tree, but I like this simple version.

This ornament idea came from Better Homes and Gardens. You can also make a candy cane or a wreath!
