Tuesday Tips: Unplug

My computer is in transit, on the way to a new hard drive somewhere in the middle of Texas. Without it, I've spent far less time online the past few days. I haven't completely unplugged.

My husband leaves me his iPod during the day, and I still pop into Facebook and check my e-mail. I've blogged and watched a few shows in my Hulu queue. But mostly, I've spent my free time doing other things. Crafty things. Cleaning things. Relaxing things.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that my Internet time is limited, and I'd like to hope that once I get my computer back (and I've done all the reloading of all my settings and have it back to normal), that I'll continue to limit my computer time. We'll see if that actually happens, but I'd like to think of it as a challenge: Can I keep up on blogging, Facebook, e-mail, and other online miscellany in X amount of time? I'll let you know...

Tuesday Tips: Be Active Online

Yesterday I won 2 free coupons for Minute Rice. Why? Because I happened to be on Facebook when they posted that they were giving them away to the first 10 people to respond to their post. Was this luck? Partially. Do I sit on Facebook all day waiting for coupons and freebies to show up? Not usually.

But. I "like" a lot of brands on Facebook. I "like" a lot of deal sites as well. So when good offers like this show up, if I happen to be online, I can catch them.

Facebook isn't the only place to find the hot deals either. I've mentioned that I use Google Reader to keep track of a whole bunch of blogs and sites. This helps me stay up to date on all the good deals that are out there. I sign up for many brands' e-mail newsletters, which give me access to exclusive coupons and deals, and which I have set up to filter into folders without clogging up my inbox.

Do I spend all day online? No. Do I hop on a few times a day to check and see if there are any good deals out there? Absolutely. What do you do online that helps you get the best deals?

By the way, Minute Rice is doing another free coupon giveaway next Monday, so you might want to go "like" their page...

Tuesday Tips: A Little Work Goes a Long Way

Sometimes programs become available that require a little bit of work, but you can reap huge benefits from them.

Some survey sites will allow free trials of full size products (earlier this year Toluna gave some of its most active members the opportunity to try, review, and KEEP an iPad!). Last fall I got paid $20 to track my snack intake for 2 weeks on a Blackberry that was sent to me (programmed specifically for the survey, which I had to return) through Lightspeed Panel.

House Party requires that you throw a party and talk about the specific brand/products they give you, but you receive free coupons and supplies to do so.

Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a program called Healthy Start for expecting women. You are assigned a nurse, who calls you every 6-8 weeks throughout your pregnancy, and talks to you about potential issues and health related topics relevant to that point in your pregnancy. This program offers a $50 Visa gift card for signing up, another one once you have the baby, and a third specifically for a carseat purchase. All for a few phone calls! I am currently participating in this program for the second time. Yes, it's a little bit of work to make sure I take the phone calls or call back, and the initial sign up takes some time, but for $150? I'll do it.

You'll also find programs that are maybe not worth the effort. I got a snail mail survey that promised to send me valuable coupons if I filled it out. They sent me a few ads and 2 coupons, one for fishsticks, and one for joint pain medication. Not really my cup of tea.

At the end of the day, you have to decide what is worth the effort for you. Remember, putting in a little bit of effort can give great results!

Mail Check!

The past two days have brought lots of mail! Lots of goodies!

Yesterday I got Marie Claire magazine (free 2 year subscription from Rewards Gold awhile back), Nescafe sampler with $1 coupon, Dove hair care sample, and 2 separate Post-It samples, with coupons!

Today I got Glamour (free subscription from frequent flier miles), Best Buy Rewards Zone coupons, 2 separate samples of Wisk Detergent, one with a $1 coupon, Life Cereal Bar sample with 2 coupons, and Emergen-C Blue sample with $1 coupon. Plus, I got the monthly local coupon flier.

You know it's a good mail day when the mailman knocks on your door and hands you some mail because it wouldn't all fit in the mailbox!
