Tuesday Tips: Reuse Things

I re-did my craft table when Jonah first started pulling himself up on things, because the "before" of this table was nowhere near baby-proofed, and he was more than willing to show me all the cool new things he could reach.

With the deals I had gotten on baby wipes, I had found that usually the tubs were the cheapest when combined with the coupons that I had. However, once we had used up the wipes, we had a big stack of plastic tubs. I knew there had to be a way to get more use out of them.

A lot of my crafty supplies can be divided into categories that stay pretty consistent - stickers, paper scraps, ribbon, glue. Random bits go in odds & ends, and I have a few unlabeled tubs for current projects or things like candles that I bought once on sale and have a specific use for, but won't necessarily buy again.
I also plan on organizing all the smaller health and beauty samples underneath the bathroom sink with a few of these tubs, but I haven't quite gotten to that yet. Desk supplies, crayons, or even building blocks for kids - these have a ton of reuses! What are you going to use your wipes tubs for?

Tuesday Tips

This week's Tuesday tip is short, but very important: Go with the flow.

Mondays are always busy home days for me. I do laundry and ironing, usually at least do some food prep if not cook or bake something, and sometimes do some shopping. All while hanging out with Jonah and still staying up-to-the-minute on all my favorite online things (Facebook/e-mail/deals/blogs).

Yesterday, I woke up feeling completely awful. Pregnancy will do that to a person. I managed to eat a bowl of cereal and drop Jesse off at school before coming home and just sitting for awhile. Eventually, I felt better, and moved on to the things on my list, but sometimes, it's important to realize that not everything will go as planned, and to adapt to the situation that is happening, rather than wishing for what you thought was going to happen.

Go with the flow.

Amazon Filler Item Finder

I found out about this site by fluke (a comment that I happened to see on Facebook). If you are shopping on Amazon, and have nearly $25 in qualifying Supersaver Shipping products (the amount necessary to get free shipping), you can go to this site, which will show you some items around the amount you need to get to $25. This is so much easier than trying to search for something low cost yourself!

Don't forget, you can get free Amazon gift cards with Swagbucks! If you don't know what Swagbucks is, read my post about it here.

Free Packs of Icky Bands

Have you heard of Silly Bandz? They're little rubber bands shaped like all sorts of things that kids wear around their wrists (but they retain their shape when they take them off). Apparently they're cool. You can request up to 4 free packs of a knock-off, Icky Bands, here. Icky Bands are supposed to remind kids to wash their hands to get rid of germs. Thanks Couponing for 4!

Lazy Trail Mix

Ingredients:
  • Corn chex cereal
  • Multigrain Cheerios
  • Popcorn
  • Cashews
  • M&Ms

Possible ingredients:

  • Raisins
  • Dried fruits (bananas, cranberries, etc.)
  • Mixed nuts/other nuts
  • Chocolate chips
  • Pretzels
  • Other cereals
  • Sunflower seeds

Put amounts you would like of each ingredient in a big bowl and mix up. Eat it. That's it. And that's why it's called lazy trail mix. I think this might become one of our snack staples around here, since it is delicious and extremely easy.

Uncluttering: The Living Room, Part One

Desk space is at a premium in our house - we just have the one little corner desk. Maybe that is why our kitchen table is always so full. The desk is also not in a very useful spot, as our couch is just to the right of it, and we have the corner kind of blocked off so Jonah won't get into too much over there. As a result, we don't use it too much either.

After clearing things off and putting them away (I see a pattern here in a lot of my uncluttering), this is now Jesse's space for the majority of his school stuff that he brings home. The big stack on the left moved here from the kitchen table, and the stuff on the pullout tray used to be on top. Now it's hidden. This is, in theory, a usable space. I say "in theory", because I still think this is more of a holding place than anything, but if all of Jesse's school stuff is held in one place, out of Jonah's reach, I'm okay with that.

Paper clips are not good for babies to eat, but they look pretty cool in baby food jars, which Jonah can't get into, at least not yet. So I don't mind him shaking these to his heart's content, as opposed to before, when he would try to eat every little non-childproofed thing.

Less than a week to go! Check out my progress so far with my other uncluttering posts!

Do You Get Junk Mail?

My lovely friend Laura asked me a question yesterday about signing up for freebies: Do you get a lot of junk mail since you sign up for all the freebie offers? I'm always afraid of junk mail and then avoid signing up...

The answer is....kind of.

In terms of snail mail junk mail, I've gotten a few offers for life/car insurance that I don't know that I would have gotten otherwise. And I accidentally signed up for a mailing list from some Bible charity that I didn't realize would send me a monthly letter asking for money (they were giving away a free book that sounded interesting). Other than that, snail mail is mostly fun freebies.

E-mail, however, is another story. Many of the offers I post have the condition of your signing up for their e-mail newsletter. For me, this is not a big deal. I simply use the auto-direct feature in hotmail to shift those e-mails to 2 big folders called "Food Newsletters" and "Newsletters". Yes, I'm original. If I feel so inclined, I can go look at them. If not, they sit there until I delete them. It took me a little bit to add the e-mail addresses and set up the auto-direct rules, but it was worth the time. And now, if a new one jumps into my inbox, I can redirect it quickly, no problem.

You also have the option of unsubscribing from pretty much all newsletters directly from the e-mail, although then you run the risk of missing out on future promotions.

Some people choose to set up a separate e-mail account specifically for freebies. I already have a separate e-mail account for anything "professional" I might do (in quotations because as I am no longer submitting resumes and haven't been for over a year, there's really no need for this e-mail), so I don't mind these coming to my everyday e-mail. You can choose what's best for you.

Uncluttering: The Kitchen, Part Two

This is one of our biggest clutter areas: the kitchen table. It's an easy place to drop everything when we come in, from mail, to non-perishable shopping trip items that haven't gotten put away yet, to Jonah's many snacks.

The chairs have lots of coats and sweatshirts on them, because it's convenient. So. I had to find a place for some things, and simply put many things away.

Much better! Most of Jonah's food went to the top of the fridge, which I cleared off (and wiped down!) yesterday. The bottles will thankfully be gone soon, as we are almost ready to start weaning from the last two per day that we currently have. Jesse's books and papers went to the desk, which is still a trouble zone. You can see my handy dandy new clipboard on the corner of the table, holding my to do list and weekly ads outside, and miscellaneous papers and clipped coupons that need to be filed inside.
The tough part will be keeping the table clean. Any suggestions for what to do with the mail, or how to keep this from being a drop zone? I'd love to hear them.
Check out the rest of my uncluttering here!

Coupon Friday!

Presenting another new feature for me: Coupon Friday! where I post some of the best printable coupons that came out this week.

Check back next Friday for some more great coupons!

Uncluttering: The Kitchen, Part One

In about a week, we will be having several people over for Jonah's birthday. Several areas of our house could use some work. What better motivation to clean things up than by posting pictures of our messy spaces before and after? First up: the kitchen.

We live in an apartment. Apartment kitchens are notorious for having very little counter space. Why waste that space on piles of things that simply didn't get put away (or don't have a spot to go yet)?

This wasn't really clear in the first picture, but on top of the microwave were a bunch of half used (or not used) prescriptions. Those are now in a bag waiting for the next time I go to Walgreens (to see if they have pill recycling). The puzzle books have a new home on my shelf in the living room, the dryer sheets returned to the cupboard with the detergent, and other things were put back where they belong. It took me about 2 minutes. And now I have counter space.
Stay tuned for more uncluttering over the next few days!

Tuesday Tips: Freezer Cooking

When you're making dinner, why not double what you're making, and freeze the second meal for another time? I did this with enchiladas yesterday. One easy way to do this is to line your 13x9 with foil. Once you have your dinner loaded, cover it with foil, label the top, and put it in the freezer. After it is frozen through, simply pop the foil package out of the pan, which you can then reuse for other cooking. When you want to cook the frozen dinner, put the foil package right back in the same pan and cook. Easy to freeze, easy to clean up! Bonus: You can store the frozen foil package either horizontally or vertically, whichever fits better in your freezer.
Enchiladas:
  • 20 tortillas
  • 2 cans enchilada sauce
  • 1 large can or 2 small cans tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup dried beans, cooked
  • 1 can corn
  • 2 cans chopped olives
  • 2 cans chopped green chiles
  • Shredded cheese
  • Chicken or ground beef (optional)

Mix beans, corn, olives, and green chiles (and meat if using). In separate bowl, mix sauces. Pour a bit of sauce mixture over filling mixture, enough to moisten. Line one 13x9 with foil. Pour a bit of sauce mixture in bottom of each 13x9 (I've found this method is easier and less messy than dipping each individual tortilla in sauce). Evenly fill tortillas with filling mixture and a bit of shredded cheese. Roll and place in 13x9s, 10 to a pan. Pour remaining sauce over top. Bake one pan at 350 for 20 minutes, or until heated through. Freeze one without baking, and pop in the oven for 20-25 minutes when you want to have it later!
